Introducing Depths 1.0
The what, when and why are we launching Depths 1.0.
Introducing Depths 1.0, a place to find and share the best free resources to learn anything.
Major new features including:
- Find and save resources in all kinds of knowledge, not just tech
- Smart topics and type tags on every resources you saved
- An ‘Event’ page for past and future learning challenges
- AI summaries and context on every resources you saved
- Pro subscription for unlimited access to all features
Before talking about the new features, let me first start by a story: the vision behind Depths 1.0.
The Beta version of Depths was designed to become a ‘social bookmark for tech people’ to explore inspiring resources. Many people loved this idea and over the course of 2023, we had 5000+ registered user. We are truly grateful.
But as we further develop Depths, we started to rethink the ‘learning’ problem — what is the most painful problem in online learning? Why is finding inspiring resources difficult? Are tech the only field where people want to find learning resources?
As we further reflect, we came into the realisation that ‘inspirations’ is just a part of the learning journey. And ‘tech’ is also just a part of the learning world.
We want to do more to help learners. We want to help anyone to learn anything. That’s the deepest ‘why’ in learning, in Depths and in us.

That’s why we decided to change Depths from ‘A social bookmark for tech people’ to ‘The world’s biggest curated learning resources library.’
Because of this new approach, the platform’s design will switch from:
- Focus on learning from each other’s inspired moments → Focus on finding and using the best resources on the Internet
- Focus on exploring and socialising → Focus on exploring, using and managing resources
- Focus on technical knowledge → All kinds of knowledge in the world
So, what are the major changes in Depths 1.0?
1/6 Resource
We redesigned the resource card to better suit your learning needs. Before in Beta, the card only shows the title, website, read time and curator’s note. It makes selecting a resources harder because not enough context is provided.
Now, you will see more context such as the topics, type, ratings and even whether it’s friendly to beginners just on the card itself.
Below is a more comprehensive redesign rationale on the new resource card UI:
Moreover, we also redesigned the page where you click the resource card. Now, there will be an AI-generated ‘Quick summary’ to help you understand more about the resource. You can also see more sepecifically which topics are this resource related to (Programming, Web dev etc…)
2/6 Tags
In Depths 1.0, we enabled a GPT-powered tagging engine to better sort and organize the resources curated to Depths. Now, each resource will be assigned a max of 3 ‘topic tags’ and 1 ‘type tag’.
3/6 Explore
With the new tagging system, the Explore page is now much more powerful. You can easily search resources by filtering your interested topics, and even select types of resources that you want to use.
4/6 My resource
In 1.0, you can now manage all your curated resources much more easily in the ‘My resource’ page.
You can access all the Depth you created here, and easily browse and retrieve you saved resources through topic and type tags.
5/6 Events
There will also be a new ‘Event page’ where you can access all learning challenges we hosted.
6/6 Pro
To support the growth of Depths, we will also launch a Pro subscription where you can unlock unlimited access to all features. More features will be launched in future, including creating a challenge and analytics.
